Gamma Chi History

In December 2002, seven ambitious ladies sparked the inspiration to establish a chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. at the University of Texas at Austin. Pursuing an organization that was in consensus with our values, principles, and goals we sought out the first Latina sorority. An interest group was formed soon after and blindly the journey was set. A two-year journey commenced.

As Latina women we knew the struggles of succeeding. We wanted to provide a haven on our campus for women alike to reach their dreams. An outlet where we would be able to cultivate the essential skills needed to accomplish our life-long aspirations. We wanted to provide a positive outlook for other ladies who shared this passion.  Through organized Informationals, seventeen ladies united with the same vision to form a zealous interest group.  However, only a select group continued with the arduous journey.

At long last, on November 20, 2004, seven strong and determined women established the Gamma Chi Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha on The University of Texas at Austin campus. They are Anna Lara, Sara Meza, Priscilla Silva, Christina Perez, Rochelle Gomez, Christina Rodriquez, and Liza Ortiz.

Gamma Chi Today

Spring 2005 was a time for new beginnings for five of the seven founding sisters. Graduation, career, travel, and other endeavors were their next step. Two founding sisters remained at the undergraduate level. Not only did these ladies maintain the chapter, host events, and maintain high academic standing, but were also responsible for the induction of four new sisters. Line One Fall ’05 and Line Two Spring’06 rejuvenated the chapter to six sisters. The four new sisters were Cecy Partida, Jessica Sanchez, Roxane Cantu, and Karla Campbell.

The event successfully raised over 200 dollars that was donated to ALLGO, a local organization providing HIV/AIDS outreach to Latinos and other communities of color in the Austin area.

Platanos and Collard Greens
In March 2006, Gamma Chi was able to successfully bring the off Broadway hit play, Platanos & Collard Greens, to campus, free of charge to students. The hip-hop comedy drama tackles the misunderstandings associated with interracial relationships.

Immigration Reform Rally
With immigration reform a particularly hot topic in the nation in the spring, Gamma Chi participated in a coalition of university organizations to enlighten the student body about HR4437 as part of April 10th’s National Day of Action.
